On Paper showcases close to thirty works from the Town Hall Gallery Collection all of which are 'on paper'. Working on paper allows artists to work in a variety of media; from printmaking to drawing to watercolour and pastels, all of which are represented in this exhibition.

There are many significant artists represented in this exhibition including John Brack, Noel Counihan, Robert Clinch, Helen Maudsley, Eric Thake and Fred Williams, all have had a strong connection to the area.

On Paper highlights some of the Town Hall Gallery's more recent acquisitions including a sketch by John Brack (Drawing for the Sun Lamps, 1966) which was purchased last year. Also, the Collection has recently acquired another two works by Eric Thake to add depth to this body of work, including an early etching by the artist created in 1926 (John Batman's House, Parramatta N.S.W, 1926)

Why are artists attracted to working on paper? There is a flexibility about paper that makes it enticing. It is easier to transport than a large bulky canvas, it is economical and can be used with multiple mediums.

With this flexibility comes fragility. Works on paper need to be cared for in special ways. Light is a ferocious enemy of paper, meaning that many of the works on paper held in the Town Hall Gallery Collection can only be shown in controlled environments and for short periods of time. This fragility of the works makes this exhibition even more special for our viewers!

Works selected for the exhibition cover various periods of history, methods of art making and themes. With works that are preliminary sketches to final printmaking works, the uses of the paper medium are extensive.

Viewers can discover more about the Town Hall Gallery Collection via our online database at: www.maxus.net.au/boroondara/civiccoll.htm

You can also find out more behind these works at In Conversation with gallery curator, Mardi Nowak on Saturday 23 July at 2pm as the curator talks about the various themes and methods used in the exhibition.
